An Uplift, not a Facelift! The Natural Choice for a Noticeable Lift, Tone, Tighten and Lift your skin with Ultherapy®

The only non-invasive FDA-approved procedure to lift skin on the neck, chin and brow
NO SURGERY, NO DOWNTIME, NO NEEDLES, NO FOREIGN SUBSTANCES

Ultherapy is a new type of non-surgical, non-invasive procedure for the face that uses ultrasound and the body’s own natural healing process to lift, tone, and tighten loose skin. The FDA-cleared device used in the procedure utilizes the safe, time-tested energy of ultrasound to stimulate the deep structural support layers of the skin—including those typically addressed in a surgical facelift—without disturbing the surface of the skin.
First came fillers in the Eighties, then lasers, then Botox—all still useful in their own way. And there’s always been surgery. Now there’s Ultherapy®—a face and neck treatment that creates a brand new category in aesthetics—non-invasive tissue lifting.
Ultherapy® is the first non surgical procedure to use focused ultrasound for skin lifting, skin firming, and skin tightening on the face and neck. NOT Radio Frequency, NOT a Laser, NOT an Injection and NOT Infrared Light source. The FDA-approved Ulthera System utilizes “Ultrasound Technology” to first visualize then treat the skin’s deep support structures. This gradually strengthens the skin from within to create just the natural lift and toning you’d like!
“Unlike traditional lasers and RF devices of the past, Ultherapy is able to deposit ultrasound energy at very precise depths. And, unlike surgery…Ultherapy® has no downtime.”

The effect of focused ultrasound energy on the growth of new collagen over time.Natural, Noticeable Results
Now there’s a way to stand firm in the face of gravity—on your terms. With Ultherapy®, there’s no downtime, no foreign substances, no radical change; just a healthy revving-up on the inside for a natural, noticeable effect on the outside.
With Ultherapy®, you can go about your day after a single, 30-60 minute in-office procedure. You may notice a short-term “boost” but the natural process of creating new, more elastic, collagen builds over time—much like the effect that exercise has on building muscle (but without the multiple workouts!).
The Beauty of Ultherapy®
Results will unfold over the course of 2-3 months and some patients have reported continued improvement for up to 6 months. While ultrasound does not duplicate the results of surgery, Ultherapy® has proven to be an inviting alternative for those who are not yet ready for surgery.
Uplifting Ultrasound
Unlike lasers, which penetrate the skin from the outside-in, Ultherapy® bypasses the surface of the skin, specifically targeting the deep, structural skin tissues where collagen lives. Using ultrasound technology, Ultherapy® actually works from the inside-out to lift and tighten skin non-invasively. Focused ultrasound energy deposited into the deep skin tissues.
The “See” and “Treat” Ultrasound
In some ways, Ultherapy® is just like an ultrasound imaging procedure that expectant mothers may receive. A smooth handpiece is placed on your skin and an image of the tissue beneath is projected on a screen. This allows your practitioner to “see” where they will treat your skin. But here’s the difference: with Ultherapy®, that same handpiece is also used to deliver tiny deposits of focused ultrasound energy at just the right depth below the skin, to the same foundational layer typically addressed in a surgical facelift.
The Lift You’re Looking For
Your skin’s response to this energy is to recondition tired skin by stimulating the growth of fresh, new collagen. The result is a tightening and gradual lifting—or shifting—of the skin back into a more youthful position and form-fitting shape.
Natural. Non-Invasive. No Downtime.
The FDA-cleared Ultherapy® procedure has been established to be safe and effective in clinical studies and tens of thousands of patient treatments worldwide. In addition, every Ultherapy® practitioner undergoes extensive hands-on training, so you can schedule your Ultherapy® procedure with complete confidence. An Ultherapy® procedure typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes, but will depend on the treatment plan determined by your practitioner. There are no special after-care requirements and you can resume your normal activities immediately. Before your procedure
No preparation whatsoever is required before your Ultherapy® procedure, although your practitioner may recommend that comfort measures such as over-the-counter or prescribed medication be taken prior to treatment.
During your procedure
After cleansing the skin and identifying the specific areas to be treated, an ultrasound gel is applied and the smooth handpiece is placed upon your skin. The focused ultrasound energy bypasses the surface of your skin and is delivered to pre-planned depths within the tissue below to stimulate collagen growth.
Comfort levels vary from patient to patient and can depend on the area treated as well. Your practitioner will discuss options for making the experience as pleasant as possible. The sensation you experience is associated with the focused ultrasound energy as it is deposited below the surface of the skin. It is noticeable just while the energy is being delivered and patients typically leave comfortable and excited about the benefits to come.
After your procedure
You are able to return to your normal activities right away, and there are no special measures you need to take. Your skin may appear flushed immediately after the ultrasound treatment, but any redness should disappear within a few hours. It is not uncommon to experience slight swelling for a few days, or tingling/tenderness to the touch for a few weeks following the procedure, but these are mild and temporary in nature. There is the possibility for other less common post-procedural effects, such as temporary small areas of bruising or numbness, and other rare effects which your physician will review with you.

What is Ultherapy®?
Ultherapy® is a non-surgical face treatment that uses ultrasound to actually lift and tone loose or sagging skin without any downtime.
What is unique about this procedure?
Ultherapy® is the only non-invasive treatment that can specifically target the deep foundation below the skin that is addressed in cosmetic surgery without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. It is also the only procedure to use ultrasound imaging, which allows us to actually see the layers of tissue we target during treatment and ensure the energy is deposited precisely to where it will be most effective.
What kind of technology does Ultherapy® use?
Ultherapy® uses tried-and-true ultrasound technology, which has received FDA clearance for use in this new type of medical procedure.
What does the ultrasound therapy do?
Ultherapy® deposits focused ultrasound energy below the surface of the skin to stimulate the body’s creation of new collagen. As a result, skin will actually begin to lift and tone over time.
What does collagen do? How does Ultherapy® stimulate the creation of collagen?
Collagen is a natural protein that gives skin its youthfulness by keeping it firmed, toned and elastic. As we age, collagen loses its elasticity and its ability to stand up to the effects of gravity that pull the skin downward. Ultherapy® jump starts a repair process that produces fresh, new collagen.
Is Ultherapy® surgery?
No. Unlike a face lift, Ultherapy® is a non-invasive procedure that addresses the skin and support layers below it, but doesn’t entail cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin.
Can Ultherapy® replace a face lift?
Ultherapy® is an “uplift” not a “face lift.” While it is not a replacement for surgery, it is a viable option for those not ready for a face lift or those looking to prolong the effects of cosmetic surgery.
How is Ultherapy® different from lasers?
Lasers typically address issues in the superficial layers of the skin (e.g. fine lines, wrinkles, pigment changes). Ultherapy® addresses the deep skin layer and the foundational layer addressed in cosmetic surgery that lift and lend support to the skin. Therefore, the two technologies are quite complementary!
Is Ultherapy® safe?
The procedure has been cleared by the FDA after demonstrating safety in clinical studies, and tens of thousands of treatments have been performed safely worldwide. In addition, ultrasound energy has a proven track record, with use in the field of medicine for more than 50 years.
Who is a good candidate for Ultherapy®?
A good candidate for Ultherapy® is someone with skin that has “relaxed” to the point of looking, and often feeling, less firm. A lowered eyebrow line or sagging skin on the eyelids, for instance, is often the first sign of “maturing” skin. Typically, those in their thirties and older who have mild to moderate skin laxity are candidates.
While Ultherapy® is not a replacement for a surgical face lift, there are many people who want some lifting but are not ready for surgery, either mentally, financially or logistically. There are also younger people who want to “stay ahead of the game” as well as those looking to prolong the effects of cosmetic surgery.
How long does the ultrasound treatment take?
A full face treatment takes 45-60 minutes, and a partial face or brow lift treatment can take around 30 minutes–neither with any downtime.
What problem areas does Ultherapy® target? What kind of results do you get?
Ultherapy® addresses mild to moderate loose or sagging skin. Specifically, by reconditioning and renewing the skin from within, Ultherapy® will lift the brow, which in turn reduces excess skin on the lids, opens up the eyes, and gives a more refreshed look overall.
How long until I see results?
Patients may enjoy some initial effect but the ultimate lifting and toning will take place over 2-3 months, as tired collagen is replaced with new, more elastic collagen. As this collagen-building process continues, further improvements can appear up to 6 months following a procedure.
How long do results last?
Patients treated with Ultherapy® still have fresh young collagen after a year’s time following the procedure, but skin continues to age. Future touch-up treatments can help keep pace with the aging process, which varies by individual.
Will I need more than one treatment?
The majority of patients only need one treatment; however, some may benefit from more than one treatment (depending on how much laxity they have and their body’s own biological response to the ultrasound and collagen-building process).
Is there any downtime?
Ultherapy® is an entirely non-invasive procedure and as such, there is no downtime. You are able to return to your normal activities right away, and there are no special measures you need to take.
Will I feel the ultrasound during the treatment?
Yes. What you are feeling during the treatment is actually tiny amounts of focused ultrasound energy being deposited below the surface of the skin.
What does it feel like?
Patients have noted there can be some discomfort while the ultrasound energy is being delivered, but it is temporary and a positive signal that the collagen-building process has been initiated.
Is Ultherapy® painful?
Comfort thresholds vary from patient to patient, but there can be some discomfort while the ultrasound energy is being delivered. This is temporary and a positive signal that the collagen-building process has been initiated.
Your practitioner will consult with you prior to your skin treatment to make your experience as pleasant as possible. Patients typically leave comfortable and excited about the benefits to come!
Are there any side effects?
There may be slight redness for up to an hour or so following the treatment, and a small percentage of patients may have slight swelling, tingling or tenderness to touch, but these are mild and temporary in nature. There is always the possibility for other less common post-procedural effects, which your practitioner will review with you.
Time inevitably takes its toll on your skin—not only in the form of wrinkles and uneven color, but in the resiliency of the skin and the contours of the face. What begins as an apple shape can end up as a pear shape as gravity, heredity, hormones, and environmental factors exert themselves.
Ultherapy® can help turn back the signs of aging by non-invasively lifting and tightening skin over time.
You may not be looking to reinvent yourself, drop 30 pounds or look 30 years younger. Maybe you just want to simply (and safely) shift your skin back toward its more youthful self. While surgery remains the gold standard for cosmetic lifting, Ultherapy® offers significant and satisfying non-surgical results.
Non-surgical cosmetic procedures are here to stay. According to a survey of more than 900 aesthetic physicians, there were over 9 million non-surgical procedures performed in 2010 in the U.S. alone¹—over 5 times the number of cosmetic surgeries!
How the Skin Ages
See 30 years of aging in two short minutes. Not only is Ultherapy® non-surgical, it’s non-invasive as well. This makes it appealing to a wide range of adults looking to exert some amount of control over their skin as it ages, particularly those who may not be ready for an invasive brow lift or face lift. Whether you are between surgeries, using a non-surgical treatment regimen, or looking for an entry-level way to put collagen in the bank as ‘skinsurance,’ Ultherapy® is a great option.
INTRODUCTION
In a Category of its Own
The Ulthera system received U.S. FDA approval in 2009 through the de novo process, creating a new category of device. It is the first and only non-invasive technology to receive an FDA indication for lift. Unlike traditional laser and radio-frequency devices that heat tissue through the skin’s surface, Ultherapy® delivers micro-focused ultrasound energy below the skin’s surface. This targets the foundational layers of the skin, precisely heating tissue to the optimal temperature for neocollagenesis (>60°C), without affecting the epidermis. Significant results, including skin tightening and lifting, can be achieved from a single 60-minute session, with no patient downtime.
HISTORY
Over 14 Years in the Making…
The technology behind Ulthera was created through a research partnership formed in 1998 to develop micro-focused ultrasound for non-invasive treatment of liver cancer. In 2004, Ulthera was established to develop this technology for the aesthetic space. After two years of extensive pre-clinical research, Ulthera conducted 3 clinical studies to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the technology. One of these studies, an efficacy study at Northwestern University in 2007, demonstrated a clinically significant brow lift in 89% of the patients treated and led to Ulthera’s first FDA indication. In September 2009, Ulthera was granted de novo 510K clearance from the FDA, designating the device as a new category of non-invasive technology without a comparable predicate.
SYSTEM
The Ulthera System Control Unit
The control unit is the heart of the system. Clinicians interact with the system through a 27” touchscreen display, and central to this display is the DeepSEE imaging window. This window provides ultrasound visualization of tissue planes down to 8mm, so clinicians know exactly where energy will be delivered. About the size of a personal computer, the control unit is compact and requires minimal room for use and storage.
HANDPIECE
The Ulthera System Handpiece
The Ulthera handpiece was designed for comfort and ease of use. Its ergonomic shape optimizes control and reduces grip fatigue, while 3 strategically placed “Treat” buttons allow energy delivery from multiple angles and hand positions. Intuitive button lighting gives visual cues on handpiece status and treatment delivery. Additionally the passive-latch mechanism makes it easy to switch between transducers during treatment.
TRANDUSCERS
Ulthera DeepSEE Transducers
Ulthera DeepSEE transducers simultaneously image to a depth of 8mm and deliver microfocused ultrasound. Three different treatment depths are currently available – the SMAS/Platysma (4.5mm), Deep Dermis (3mm) and Superficial Dermis (1.5mm). Transducers are multi-patient use, and optional tapered transducers are available to increase access to confined regions of the face.

SCIENCE
The Science Behind Non-Invasive Lift
The Ulthera System is the only non-invasive aesthetic device that uses micro-focused ultrasound to lift skin. Micro-focused ultrasound has significant advantages over other treatment modalities because it delivers energy with the optimal Depth, Temperature and Precision necessary to lift skin.
DEPTH
Lifting the Skin’s Foundational Layer
Tissue laxity is largely the result of structural weakening in the foundational layers of the skin (SMAS/Platysma). These layers were previously accessible only during a surgical facelift because non-invasive modalities, such as lasers and radio-frequency, are limited to treating in the dermis (< 3mm). The Ulthera System is the only technology that non-invasively focuses energy to 4.5mm deep, targeting the foundational tissue layers where laxity begins.
TEMPERATURE
The Optimal Temperature for Neo-collagenesis
Clinical studies demonstrate that collagen contraction and denaturation are optimized at temperatures between 60°C – 70°C. The Ulthera System is the only device that reaches these optimized temperatures at depth, without causing surface effects. The ultrasound energy is micro-focused to a point below the skin’s surface, causing cellular friction and heating tissue at the focal point to ~65°C. This heat causes collagen contraction and denaturation, forming a series of Thermal Coagulation Points (TCPs) approximately 1mm3. During a full treatment, over 10,000 TCPs are created at multiple depths, initiating collagen synthesis.
PRECISION
Precision Energy Delivery for Consistent Results
Without precise energy delivery, it’s impossible to achieve consistent patient results. Lasers are precise, but only treat superficially. Radio-frequency reaches deeper than lasers, but imprecisely bulk heats tissue at variable temperatures. Ultherapy® is the only technology that precisely heats tissue at prescribed depths using ultrasound. Energy is consistently delivered at a specific depth and temperature, with fractional spacing between TCPs to promote healing. Real-time imaging also allows clinicians to plan exactly where energy will be deposited. While patient outcomes are partly dictated by individual healing response, treatment delivery with Ultherapy® is consistent and reproducible.
CLINICAL
Ultherapy® Procedure Overview
During Ultherapy®, micro-focused ultrasound is delivered in a series of lines at 3 discrete tissue depths, including the skin’s foundational layer (SMAS / Platysma) at 4.5mm deep. Each line contains 12-23 Thermal Coagulation Points (TCP’s), spaced approximately 1mm apart to promote healing. A TCP is formed when ultrasound energy is focused to a point below the skin’s surface, concentrating 95% of the delivered energy to an area approximately 1mm3. Tissue at the focal point is heated to ~65°C, causing immediate collagen contraction and initiating aggressive collagen synthesis, while intervening tissue, including the skin’s surface, is unaffected.
STUDIES
Clinical Studies on Ultherapy®
Clinical studies have demonstrated that one Ultherapy® treatment can produce a significant lift without patient downtime. A study published in the AAD Journal in 2010 (1) reported that 90 days after treatment, 89% of subjects had a clinically significant brow lift of 1.9mm on average. Other studies have demonstrated the scientific foundation and safety of micro-focused ultrasound with visualization as a treatment modality. Ulthera is currently investing in over 25 new studies to evaluate all aspects of treatment, including new indications for off-face and medical applications.
